The Forest Department on Monday arrested three farmers from Amarakuni near Pulpalli for hunting a Giant Malabar Squirrel inside the Irulam Forest Station limits. The accused have been identified as Jayan Pulikkal (55), Rajan Pulikka (57), and Shino Kuzhuppil (47).

Based on a tip-off received by Chethalath Forest Range Officer M K Rajeev Kumar, officials seized a hunting knife, an air gun, and the squirrel’s carcass. The air gun is suspected to have been modified by blacksmiths to enhance its firing power, potentially enough to kill even a deer, said Deputy Forest Range Officer Abdul Gafoor. The team included Beat Forest officers Ajeesh P S, Jithin Viswanath, and Soumya B.

The accused were produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court II at Sulthan Bathery and remanded to judicial custody.
