Three UDF MLAs were placed under suspension on Thursday for improper conduct and violent behaviour following a raucous session marked by loud sloganeering and protests over the Sabarimala gold scandal. Speaker A N Shamseer invoked the relevant provisions of the Assembly Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business to suspend Roji M John, M Vincent and Saneeshkumar Joseph. LSGD Minister M B Rajesh introduced the motion to suspend the MLAs.
In his motion, Rajesh said that the MLAs showed violent behaviour by lunging towards the Chief Minister, ringing bells in the assembly without permission, racing towards the Speaker's podium and assaulted the Watch and Ward staff of the assembly. The behaviour brought disrepute to the dignity of the house, Rajesh said in the motion. In the absence of the opposition, the motion was put to vote and the LDF members supported the motion. The Speaker then declared the motion as passed and the MLAs were suspended for the remaining sessions. It was alleged that the Assembly Chief Marshal got injured in the ruckus and he was taken to the Medical College hospital.
Earlier, the assembly session was disrupted for the fourth consecutive day as the UDF MLAs gathered in the well of the assembly, raising banners and demanding the resignation of the Devaswom Minister V N Vasavan. The opposition amped up protests over the Sabarimala issue and when the Speaker ordered the watch and ward to seize the banner, tension mounted further. The LDF MLAs, though voiced their objections to what they called as unruly conduct, remained confined to their seats to avoid a direct confrontation with the opposition MLAs.
