Rajapuram: Malayala Manorama’s Maalakkallu agent, T O John, started his agency in 1970, around the same time the newspaper launched its Kozhikode edition.

The newspaper was priced at just 5 paisa, with a monthly subscription of ₹7.50. In those days, its distribution network extended beyond Maalakkallu to cover Kolichal, Kallar, Rajapuram and Chullikkara.

Newspaper bundles dispatched from Kozhikode via the West Coast Express were collected at Kanhangad by the local agent, Asees, and then sent to Maalakkallu by bus. The bundles would reach Maalakkallu around 8 a.m. In those days, there were no personal vehicles for distribution as newspapers were delivered by travelling on buses. Copies meant for each town were kept at local shops for the readers.

Later, John launched a business in Rajapuram town. Although John settled in Rajapuram and shifted his agency there, it continues to be known as the Maalakkallu agency. Over time, separate agents were appointed for each town. In the early days, John also collected and  reported news from the high ranges.

Now aged 88, John has handed over the responsibilities to his son, Prince, as age has begun to take its toll, he said.
