Madappally: Wild pigs straying from the forests are wreaking havoc on farmlands, destroying the hard work and livelihoods of local farmers. “We cannot move forward without compensation,” laments Pushpamma Mathew of Injikkala, a farmer from Mundukuzhy. The animals have trampled the plantain and tapioca she was cultivating on leased land, leaving her labour and investment in ruins.

Pushpamma, who has been farming for the past 25 years, says the wild pig menace has worsened drastically over the last five years. Many farmers in the region have abandoned agriculture altogether, unable to cope with the recurring destruction. Frustrated by official inaction, the farming community has now decided to protest.

Protest on October 15
Babu Kuttanchira, president of the Madappally Development Council, said protests are being organised in response to the panchayat’s failure to act against the wild pig menace. The farmers will stage a protest in front of the panchayat office at 10 am on October 15.
