Kozhikode: The Kozhikode Rural Police are tightening their legal response around the UDF–police dispute at the Perambra march incident, during which Congress MP Shafi Parambil was injured in police action on Friday.
On Monday, the Perambra Police registered a new case related to the march, alleging that UDF activists had thrown an explosive substance at police personnel. The complaint was filed by Station House Officer P Jamsheed, based on footage captured by a police cameraman during the protest.
According to the FIR, officers came across the visuals while reviewing footage as part of an earlier case registered for an alleged attack on police personnel on duty. The video reportedly shows a protester throwing an explosive device with the intent to obstruct official duties and endanger lives. The accused has not been identified.
The case has been registered under Sections 189(2), 189(3), 189(4), 191(2), 191(3), 285, 132, 121(1), and 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Explosive Substances Act, 1908. Sub Inspector Jithinvas K is the investigating officer.
Meanwhile, another case has been filed in connection with alleged online threats against a police officer following the Perambra march. The complaint was lodged by Vishnu Valsan Padicharayil, Personal Security Officer to the Deputy Superintendent of Kozhikode Rural Police.
Four individuals — Jaffar Perambra, V T Sayooj, Anto Thadathil, and Nissam Kollam — have been accused of posting threats to kill the officer and inciting violence on WhatsApp and Facebook. The case has been registered under Sections 192 and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police have also registered a case against Congress MP Shafi Parambil and several UDF and LDF workers over the violent clashes during rival rallies in Perambra. Around 700 people, including Kozhikode DCC president Praveen Kumar, have been booked. The charges under the BNS include rioting, obstructing public ways, using force to deter public servants, and causing hurt to them. Congress leaders PK Ragesh, Sathyan Kadiyangad, Rajan Maruthery, Azees, and KK Vinodan are also among the accused.
