Thrissur: A civil police officer (CPO) attached to the Vellikulangara police station allegedly attempted suicide after being repeatedly denied leave. He was reportedly made to work without a break.
Before the incident, the officer shared a voice message in the station’s WhatsApp group expressing despair over the situation. He reportedly tried to hang himself, but the ceiling fan gave way, leaving him with injuries that required 17 stitches on his face. He is currently undergoing treatment.
In the audio clip, the officer alleged that the Rural SP had failed to address the severe staff shortage at the station and that the Station CI was under undue pressure from senior officers. He also claimed his mother’s surgery had to be postponed three times due to repeated leave rejections and questioned whether the denial was linked to his refusal to pay a demanded amount.
“It has reached a point where I may have to write the SP’s name and end my life. This voice message is for all police personnel,” he says in the recording.
Rural SP B Krishnakumar has denied the allegations, stating that the Station CI handles leave approvals and that adequate staff are available at the station. Following the incident, the Special Branch DYSP has launched an investigation. Officials said further action would follow a detailed inquiry.
