Kozhikode Medical College becomes first state-run institute in India to offer PG course in Nuclear Medicine

Thiruvananthapuram/ Kozhikode: In a first for India, postgraduate (PG) seats in Nuclear Medicine have been sanctioned for a state-run medical college — the Government Medical College, Kozhikode. Announcing this, Health Minister Veena George said the approval marks a significant milestone for Kerala’s medical education and cancer care sectors.
Meanwhile, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 81 new medical PG seats across Kerala this year. These include 17 at Alappuzha Medical College, 15 each at Ernakulam and Kannur Medical Colleges, 30 at Kollam Medical College, two at Kozhikode Medical College, and two at Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC), Thalassery, where PG seats have been newly introduced in Radiation Oncology.
According to the minister, the addition of PG programs in Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Oncology will greatly enhance Kerala’s capacity in advanced cancer diagnosis and treatment.
A total of 270 new faculty posts have been created in government medical colleges to support the expansion. The government has also initiated steps to introduce PG programs in Infectious Diseases and Critical Care at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
