Thiruvananthapuram/ Kollam: The 13-year-old girl who was critically injured after jumping off the foothills of Kannadipara in Kollam has succumbed to her injuries. The deceased, Shivarna, daughter of Suku, was a native of Mundappally in Adoor. She breathed her last on Monday around 6.20 pm while undergoing treatment at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, where she had been on ventilator support.
On Friday evening, Shivarna and her friend Meenu, both Class 9 students of Peringanad Thrichenamangalam Government Higher Secondary School, reportedly left home after telling their families they were attending their school’s Kalolsavam (arts festival). However, they travelled instead to Maruthimala Eco-Tourism Centre in Muttara, Kollam, and climbed up to Kannadipara, a popular but risky viewpoint nearly 1,000 feet above sea level.
Around 5.45 pm, a local resident, Vishnudath, noticed the girls standing precariously close to the edge. He recorded a short video and went to alert others, including the Pooyappally police, but before help could reach, the girls leapt from the cliff. Meenu, a native of Peringad, Adoor, died on the spot, while Shivarna was rescued in a critical condition and shifted first to a private hospital in Kollam and later to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
A brief note recovered from the site hinted at heartbreak as a possible reason behind the act. Residents said the girls were spotted in the area from noon but drew no attention as the tourist centre was crowded.
The girls’ families realised something was wrong when they couldn’t reach them by phone. Meenu’s parents had gone to school expecting to see her perform, only to learn she hadn’t turned up. By 3 pm, they lodged a missing complaint at Adoor police station, which later traced Meenu’s phone signal to Pooyappally.
According to the families, there had been no issues at home or school that could have triggered such an incident. Shivarna’s body will be handed over to her family after an autopsy at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College on Tuesday.
