Mozambique boat tragedy: Kollam native’s body identified

The body of a 35-year-old man from Kollam, who went missing in the Mozambique boat tragedy, has been identified as that of Sreerag Radhakrishnan, a native of Naduvilakara in Thevalakkara. The confirmation was conveyed to his family by Scorpio Maritime Management India Pvt. Ltd, the company he was employed with.
Sreerag, with nearly a decade of experience, was working with Scorpio Maritime and was on his way to board the tanker MT Sea Quest when the boat carrying 21 people, including 14 Indians, capsized in rough weather near Beira port early on October 16.
“The company has informed us that his body has been identified. However, details regarding the repatriation are still awaited. We’ve been trying to contact the Indian High Commission to clarify the next steps. None of us is travelling to Mozambique at this point,” a family member said.
Sreerag had resumed duty after a six-month break and left for Mozambique on October 13. He is survived by his wife Jeethu, a six-year-old daughter, and a six-month-old son. His parents are P P Radhakrishnan and Sheela.
Another Keralite, Indrajith Santhosh (22) from Veliyanad in Piravom, remains missing in the same incident. A mechanical engineer working as a hull inspector with Aries Marine & Engineering Services, Kochi, Indrajith was also aboard the ill-fated boat.
The Indian High Commission in Mozambique earlier confirmed that three Indian nationals have died and five have been rescued. The wreckage of the vessel has been located deep underwater near Beira port.
