Agali farmer suicide over 'thandaper' issue; Government forms SIT for probe

Thiruvanthapuram: Following the allegations of irregularities in the functioning of the Agali village office, which led to the death of a farmer in the region, the Revenue Department of the State Government on Thursday issued an order announcing the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a detailed investigation into the matter.
53-year-old Krishnaswamy was found hanging from a tree in his farmland on October 20. According to his family, Krishnaswamy applied for the "thandaper" for his land and left home on October 18 to obtain it.
However, he was denied the document as the officials claimed that the land was not in his name. His family believes this is what pushed Krishnaswamy to take the extreme step.
Following the incident, allegations against the Agali village office and the Attappadi Tribal Taluk Office surfaced. In response to the incident, Congress and BJP workers protested at the civil station, demanding an investigation and action against those involved.
Sentil Kumar, ward member of the Agali Panchayat, told Onmanorama that the Attappadi Tribal Taluk Office was plagued by corruption, and that officers have links with the land mafia, which may be the reason for the altered documents.
The SIT led by Deputy Secretary Anu S Nair includes Sajith Kumar, Head Surveyor, Resurvey Office, Thrissur; Suguthan, Revenue Inspector, Government Land Resumption Special Office, Thiruvananthapuram; and Niyas Naasar, Senior Head Surveyor, Kothamangalam Taluk Office.
Further, officers from the Land Revenue Commissionerate, Thiruvananthapuram, and Palakkad District may also be deputed to the Investigation Team for assistance as required.
The team is expected to submit a detailed report, including findings and recommendations, to the Government within one week.
