Thrissur: An unidentified man broke into the Kannanamkulam Mahadeva Temple at Chentrappinni here early Friday and stole around ₹50,000 from two donation boxes and an office almirah, temple officials said.

The burglary reportedly occurred around 3 am. The thief, wearing a helmet and raincoat, was spotted by a temple staff member but escaped after issuing threats.

Temple authorities said the burglar took only currency notes, leaving coins and silver offerings untouched. About ₹6,775 kept in an almirah in the committee office was also stolen.

The donation boxes had last been opened on September 3, and officials estimate the total loss at around ₹50,000. Police noted that the temple’s CCTV system was switched off during the incident.
