One killed, 18 injured as tourist bus skids off road in Kottayam

Kottayam: A person was killed after a tourist bus carrying 49 passengers veered off the road at Kuryanad in Kuravilangad here on Monday morning. The deceased is Sandhya, a native of Iritty in Kannur. Though 18 people were injured in the accident, none of them is in critical condition. Manorama News reported that all passengers in the bus were from Kannur.
The bus, which was en route to Kannur from Thiruvananthapuram, met with the accident on the MC Road near Cheenkallel bridge around 1.30 am. It is suspected that the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
The bus reportedly lost control, overturned and crashed into a tree while negotiating a curve on the MC Road stretch near Cheenkallel Church. The bus was later removed using a crane to clear the traffic disruption.
The injured are admitted to a private hospital in Monippally and the Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam. Kuravilangad Police and Fire and Rescue personnel from Kaduthuruthi jointly carried out the rescue operations.
According to the police, all passengers were from Iritty and were returning home after visiting Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram.
Kuravilangadu police have registered a case against the driver, Vinod, for negligent driving and causing death by accident.
The body of the deceased will be handed over to relatives after postmortem.
