Thiruvananthapuram: For her mother, who once had to give up running and jumping midway through her athletic dreams, Alka Shinoj has now sprinted ahead to win two gold medals at the State School Sports Meet that concluded here.
Alka, a Class 8 student of St. George HSS, Kulathuvayal, Kozhikode, claimed her second gold in the 400 metres for sub-junior girls on Tuesday. Earlier, she had secured gold in the 600 metres event. Adding to her tally, she also won silver in the 200 metres and bronze in the 4x100 metres relay.
In the previous edition of the State School Sports Meet, Alka had emerged as the individual champion, winning gold in the 400m, 200m, and 600m events in the sub-junior girls’ category.
Alka is the daughter of Pulivayal Shinoj and Jithina, a former athletic couple from Koorachundu, Kozhikode. She is now living her mother’s unfulfilled dream of a career in athletics, which was cut short by life’s circumstances. Her father currently serves as a Havildar in the CRPF stationed in Jammu and Kashmir.
Alka trains under Peter Karumanakkuzhy, Sini Joseph and Vijayan.
