Thripunithura: In a yet another instance of gross negligence and lack of civic sense, the area behind the second platform in the railway station has been turned into a garbage dump yard. However, the authorities continue their apathy despite grievances from various quarters. Huge piles of inorganic waste materials like plastic bottles, cups and food packets could be seen in the area behind the second platform that is covered in thickets and weeds.
Most of these are either carelessly thrown by the passengers or dumped from the kiosks at the railway station. Passengers allege that the authorities refuse to take any action even as the stench from the waste piles lingers on the platform. Besides, there is also a risk of proliferation of mosquitoes. The situation would get worse when it starts to rain.
Passengers have been urging the railway authorities to clear the waste materials and clean the area as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the railway authorities say that the people bring waste even from their homes to dump them at the railway station.
The street dogs that sniff around the waste piles carry them to the platforms. Employees on night duty and passengers who wait on the platforms to board the night trains are troubled by the foul smell as well as the presence of the stray dogs. Meanwhile, passengers are urging the authorities to conduct awareness campaigns as well as to install CCTV cameras to prevent dumping of waste on the platform.
