Thiruvananthapuram: In a shocking incident, a retired Coast Guard official allegedly murdered his mother by slitting her throat at Kalliyoor near Vizhinjam on Wednesday night.

The deceased is Vijayakumari (76), a retired government official and a native of Kalliyoor's Pakaloor. Nemom Police have arrested her son Ajayakumar (56), who is accused of committing the crime while under the influence of alcohol.

According to Manorama News, the incident occurred around 11.30 pm on Wednesday. Neighbours told police that Ajayakumar was a habitual drinker who had undergone treatment at de-addiction centres multiple times.

It is reported that a quarrel broke out after Vijayakumari confronted her son over his alcohol abuse. In a fit of rage, Ajayakumar allegedly stabbed her in the abdomen. When the elderly woman tried to escape, he chased her outside the house and slit her throat, killing her instantly. Reports suggest that he also inflicted injuries on her wrist and leg. Neighbours, who rushed to the house after hearing Vijayakumari’s screams, alerted the police.

Neighbours expressed shock over the gruesome killing. Police sources said Ajayakumar had access to large quantities of liquor through his military quota, and around 10 bottles were found stored at his house.
It is learnt that the accused also attempted to burn his mother’s body by pouring liquor over it.
