Kochi: The Air Intelligence Unit of Customs at Kochi airport on Monday seized 6.4 kg of hybrid ganja worth around ₹6.4 crore from a passenger who arrived from Bangkok.
Acting on specific intelligence received by Deputy Commissioner Roy Varghese, the officers intercepted the passenger, identified as Abdul Samad, a native of Wayanad, who arrived at the airport on VietJet from Bangkok via Vietnam at around 10.30 pm on Monday.
A detailed examination of his check-in baggage led to the recovery of 6,446 grams of hybrid ganja, a highly potent variant of the narcotic. The contraband was concealed inside his luggage, Customs said.
Customs officers said the seizure underscores the increasing attempts to smuggle high-grade narcotics through international flights into Kerala. The accused was arrested and will be produced before the Angamaly Judicial Magistrate Court.
Further investigation has been launched to trace the source of the contraband and its intended recipients. The officers said they are checking Samad's background.
