Elamdesam: Local residents demanded to redevelop the Kuruthikkulam–Poochapra–Devarupara Road and rebuild the damaged protective wall along its stretch.

Nearly half a kilometre of the road between Poochapra and Devarupara is in ruins, with dislodged metal stones and large potholes making commuting difficult. Locals allege that the Public Works Department (PWD) has failed to take any measures to repair the road.

The road was severely damaged during a 2010 landslide that claimed two lives and destroyed several houses. Debris from the landslide swept across the area, collapsing the protective wall and leaving the road structure unstable ever since.

Even after 14 years, authorities have not yet begun reconstruction of a protective wall at the site. Last year, another landslide occurred about 50 metres from this stretch, and debris again flowed down. But the PWD has not taken action to build a protective wall at this site, either.

Despite estimates being prepared for strengthening both stretches, no follow-up action has been taken so far. PWD officials said an estimate of ₹23 lakh has been submitted to the government, and that work to construct the protective wall and repair the road will begin once funds are sanctioned.
