Thiruvananthapuram: A portion of a container reportedly carried by MSC Elsa 3, the ship that sank off the Kochi coast on May 25 this year, has been found on the seabed near Kovalam. This marks the first underwater discovery of debris from the Elsa 3 shipwreck.

The remnants of the container were located following a search based on information provided by clam gatherers working in the sea near Ashoka Beach in Kovalam. The wreckage was found lodged between underwater rocks that are an extension of the ‘Mukkom’ hill at Kovalam Beach. The container was partially buried in sand on the seabed. The search team that located the container comprised divers from Thiruvananthapuram-based Friends of Marine Life and Scuba Divers, an organisation based in Kochi.

The vessel sank about 14.6 nautical miles from Thottappally in Alappuzha district on May 25. At the time, it was carrying 640 containers, including 13 with hazardous cargo, 12 with calcium carbide, 84.44 MT of diesel, and 367.1 MT of furnace oil.
