Thiruvananthapuram: The pre-test for India's first-ever digital census has begun in Kerala, marking a significant step towards the 2027 Census. As part of the pre-test phase, sample areas in the districts of Palakkad, Ernakulam, and Idukki have been selected. It will continue until November 30.

The pre-test is being conducted as per the notification from the Government of India under the Census Act of 1948, which outlines the methodology for the upcoming 2027 census. 

The selected sample regions for the first phase of pre-test include:

  • Palakkad District: The tribal taluk offices in Attappady, and the villages of Kallamala and Sholayur.
  • Idukki District: The village of Irattayar in the Udumbanchola taluk.
  • Ernakulam District: Wards 1 to 4 of the Kochi Municipal Corporation.

District Collectors have been appointed as Principal Census Officers for the pre-test, while the Tahsildars of Udumbanchola and Attappady and the Secretary of Kochi Corporation have been assigned as charge officers. Enumerators will collect data directly from households.

The digital census, a first in India, will be conducted in two phases- household listing and population enumeration. The pre-test is crucial to identifying and resolving key challenges related to digital tools and design protocols to ensure smooth census operations. These challenges include addressing issues such as geographical remoteness, difficult terrain, internet connectivity problems, and specific issues in rural and tribal areas.
