Koyilandi: The famous Kappad beach in Kozhikode has retained its blue flag certification for the sixth year in a row.
The orchid rehabilitation project helmed by the district tourism promotion council at the beach has won the first prize in the best performance and compliance category in the 2025 edition of the Southern Hemisphere Blue Flag certification.
The beach won the award for preventing the disappearance of insects and pollinators. The Kappad project aims to preserve the local orchid varieties and protect pollinators like bees and butterflies.
This project was envisioned to scientifically preserve the ecology by aligning with the blue flag standards like environmental sustainability, preventing climate change and preserving the coastal ecosystem.
An international eco-label, Blue Flag certification is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) based in Denmark to beaches, marinas, and boating operators that meet 33 stringent criteria for environmental management, sustainability, safety and cleanliness.
