The Forest Department has banned night safaris conducted by private resorts along the Kattikulam–Kutta and Kattikulam–Thirunelli routes in Wayanad.

The move comes after the Police warned of the dangers of allowing unregulated night travel through forest areas. Despite the risks, several resorts had been taking tourists through wildlife-active zones, causing noise and disturbance to animals such as elephants, leopards, and tigers.

Wayanad SP Taposh Basumatari had written to the Forest Department, citing safety concerns and incidents where tourists behaved irresponsibly, provoking wild animals during late-night drives.

Forest patrol teams stationed at Thett Road Junction on the Tirunelli–Mysore stretch regularly intercept vehicles, advise tourists to turn back, and caution them about the dangers. Officials also noted that some travellers used high-powered halogen lights, which severely disrupt nocturnal wildlife.

“We constantly warn night riders about the risks of travelling through forests at odd hours,” said Jayesh Joseph, Deputy Range Officer, Begur Forest Range. Many tourists flash torchlights, honk, or take photographs near elephant herds, causing unnecessary stress to animals, he added.

A recent viral video showing a tusker attacking a youth—after being provoked—has further underscored the need for stricter night patrolling. Officials say such incidents, though involving only a few individuals, pose serious risks to both wildlife and visitors.
