Kochi: In a major step toward modernising Kochi’s sewage infrastructure, the Kerala Water Authority is preparing to lay a new underground pipeline that will connect households in the Girinagar and Kadavanthra divisions to the upcoming sewage treatment plant (STP) at Elamkulam. The tendering process has begun for the 27.74 km network, which is being implemented under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme at a cost of ₹70.48 crore.

Additionally, a 17.23 km pipeline is planned in the Elamkulam division under the Rebuild Kerala initiative. This line will also be linked to the new STP.

Currently, only about 5 per cent of the sewage generated within Kochi Corporation limits is scientifically treated at the Elamkulam facility, and the city’s existing underground pipeline network extends to just around 22 km.

The city currently generates 125.90 million litres of sewage daily, a volume expected to rise to 146.50 million litres by 2053. A significant portion of the sewage produced in the city now flows directly into canals and other water bodies. With the planned expansion of the sewage pipeline network to more areas, pollution levels in these canals and water bodies are expected to reduce considerably.

The KWA has already prepared a master plan for sewage treatment in the city, dividing the Corporation into 12 zones. Meanwhile, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is also implementing new STP projects as part of the State government’s canal renovation efforts.
