Kochi: A 56-year-old man suffered serious burn injuries after he was set ablaze by an acquaintance at Kadavanthra in Kochi early Monday. The incident happened around 12.50 am on the Kadavanthra–Ayyappan Road, near the GCDA Junction, on the median between Metro Pillars 780 and 781.
The survivor, Joseph, a native of Piravom, is undergoing treatment at Ernakulam General Hospital. Police have taken the accused, Antappan, into custody.
According to Kadavanthra police, the attack stemmed from a dispute over money that the accused had allegedly taken from Joseph’s pocket. According to the FIR, when Joseph demanded it back, Antappan allegedly approached him while he was asleep on the median, poured petrol over him, and said, “You burn and die” before lighting a match and setting him on fire.
Joseph sustained burns on the back of his head, shoulders, arms, chest, and abdomen. Kadavanthara police have registered a case under Sections 118(2) (causing grievous hurt using dangerous means) and 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
