Ernakulam: Multiple incidents of coconut thefts have been reported from Neericode, near Alangad in Ernakulam, as soaring prices have made the commodity a prime target. Most of the thefts occur under the cover of darkness, with the latest incident reported early on Monday, at the residence of Henry in Chelat, Neerikode.

About 60 coconuts, which had been plucked on Sunday and left stacked in the courtyard, were stolen during the night. Henry said that somebody who was aware that the coconuts were lying in the compound could have carried out the crime. It is assumed that a vehicle was used to carry the stolen coconuts.

Just two days earlier, a water pump motor was stolen from the neighbouring home of Inchakkal Joseph.

The theft at Henry’s residence marks the tenth such case in Neerikode in recent months. Residents say unfamiliar individuals and migrant labourers are frequently spotted moving around the neighbourhood at night, raising concerns about security in the area.

"Coconut thieves and drug addicts are creating problems in many coconut groves in Kottuvally panchayat also when it is dark. The police have to carry out night patrolling to tackle this issue," said a resident.
