Kochi: The 'Human Library', where people become 'books' and share their life stories, opened at Manorama Hortus, marking a new milestone in the history of literature festivals.
Launched as part of the Hortus Arts and Cultural Festival, scheduled at Subhash Park in Kochi from November 27 to 30, the 'Human Library' made its debut at Idam Art Café in Panampilly Nagar on Monday. Five 'Human Books' opened up their lives, sharing the intense and unique experiences that shaped them. Most of the audience comprised college students.
Among the 'books' were a danseuse who recounted her fiery journey to winning international awards; an award-winning farmer who revealed his gender identity long before it became a topic of public discussion; a man who survived a near-death experience caused by alcohol and embraced a new lease on life; a determined woman who defied physical limits with a smile, asking, ‘Why have hands when legs are enough to fly?’; and a man who scaled the peak of Mount Everest, proving that perceived limitations are often just perceptions.
Each 'book' spoke from the heart, and the 'readers' listened intently, fully immersed in the stories.
The session also became a space for dialogue, as readers sat close, asked questions and sparked new friendships. The only complaint from participants was that “time was not enough.” Both the 'books' and the readers shared the excitement of experiencing the Human Library concept for the first time. Clinical Psychologist Sharikka Sam guided the event and ensured a smooth interaction.
From November 27 to 30, My Story – Hortus Living Library will be open at Subhash Park from 10 am to 11 am daily. Attendees can 'read' a variety of books, each carrying the warmth, depth and fragrance of diverse life experiences.
