Kottayam: A youth was stabbed to death at Manikunnam here in the early hours of Monday. The deceased is Adarsh (23), a native of Puthupally's Manganam. Police have taken former Kottayam municipal councillor Anil Kumar and his son Abhijith into custody in connection with the murder.

According to police, a financial dispute between Abhijith and Adarsh led to the crime. A resident here said that Abhijith had called Adarsh to his house to settle an issue related to a rented bike. During the heated argument that followed, Abhijith allegedly took a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Adarsh.

CCTV footage from Anil Kumar’s residence shows Abhijith suddenly pulling out a knife and attacking his friend while the two were talking near the gate. Hearing the commotion, Abhijith’s mother ran out and tried to stop her son. Moments later, his father, Anil Kumar, also arrived and attempted to break up the assault. However, Abhijith stabbed Adarsh to death. 

Police said the father and son then tried to dump the body in a nearby pond, but were caught after locals noticed their attempt. Both Adarsh and Abhijith were reportedly booked earlier in drug cases.

Police will record the arrests after the inquest and interrogation. The body will be handed over to the family after the autopsy at the Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital.
