Alappuzha: Kayamkulam native Anilkumar Raveendran, who was in detention of Houthi rebels in war-torn Yemen since July 7, has been released and brought to Muscat, from where he is expected to fly back to India soon.
Anilkumar was the Security Officer on board the cargo ship MV Eternity C, which was sunk by Houthi rebels through grenade bombings in July. Anilkumar and 10 other crew members on board were reported to be missing following the wreck.
However, towards the end of July, Anilkumar called home and spoke briefly with his wife, Sreeja, and their son, informing them that he was in Yemen. His wife then informed the embassy, which began coordinated efforts to ensure Anilkumar's return. Since India did not have an embassy in Yemen, the Indian embassy in Oman coordinated his release and ensured his return.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) welcomed the release of Anilkumar and thanked the Sultanate of Oman for facilitating it. It also said that the government had been coordinating his release with various parties to ensure his safe release and return.
