The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has clarified that the fatal girder collapse at the project site on November 13 occurred due to a violation of safety protocols by the commuter and a mechanical failure of a hydraulic jack. However, the response did not specify the exact safety protocol the deceased was alleged to have violated.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, in a written reply to Alappuzha MP K C Venugopal in the Lok Sabha, stated that the accidents reported along the Aroor–Thuravoor project stretch occurred due to several factors, including the failure to strictly enforce approved traffic diversion plans, non-adherence to traffic rules, and restricted Right of Way.
In the reply, it was also reported that a total of 12 deaths occurred along the Aroor–Thuravoor stretch in 2025 alone.
Rajesh (48), a native of Pallippad, died on November 13 after massive girders, each weighing around 80 tonnes, fell onto his vehicle while he was passing through the work site at Eramalloor around 3am. According to the District Collector, the girders slipped from the machine as workers attempted to position them on the under-construction flyover.
