Alappuzha: The Irrigation Department began closing the shutters of the Thanneermukkom Bund in Vembanad Lake, following a decision taken at an advisory committee meeting chaired by District Collector Alex Varghese on December 11.

In line with the agricultural calendar, the shutters are scheduled to remain closed from December 15 and will be reopened on March 15.

Of the 90 shutters at the bund, 28 in the middle section (third phase) were lowered from Monday morning. The shutters in the first and second phases, along with the four navigation locks, are expected to be fully closed by today or tomorrow, according to M Jamshid, Assistant Engineer (Mechanical Division) of the Irrigation Department.
