Idukki: After years of hardship, children from the Mangaparakudy forest settlement in Marayur can finally hope for safe access to school, following the intervention of Justice Alexander Thomas, Chairman of the Kerala State Human Rights Commission.

The intervention has triggered steps to make the forest route to the settlement accessible and secure. As many as five children from the tribal hamlet had been unable to attend school due to the absence of a motorable road.

Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports on the issue, the Commission chairman summoned the Adimali Tribal Development Officer and the Devikulam Tahsildar to a sitting of the Commission. He directed them to initiate the necessary measures to resolve the problem.

The 10-kilometer forest path to Mangaparakudy is fraught with wildlife risks. During the sitting, the Munnar Wildlife Warden assured the Commission that steps would be taken to concrete the road, making it navigable. The District Panchayat Secretary also informed the Commission that ₹4 crore will be earmarked for this project.
