Alappuzha: The Thanneermukkom Bund in Vembanad Lake has been fully closed, with all 90 shutters and four navigation locks lowered. The operation, carried out under the supervision of Irrigation Department officials over the past three days, was completed by Thursday noon.

All shutters and navigation locks were closed using machinery. According to M Jamsheed, Assistant Engineer of the Irrigation Department, permission will be granted to open the navigation locks during duty hours to facilitate the movement of vessels.

As per the Kuttanad agricultural calendar, the shutters of the bund are scheduled to be closed by December 15 and reopened by March 15. The timely closure this year, in line with the schedule, is expected to benefit farmers in the Kuttanad region.
