Kannur: A massive fire broke out at a plastic recycling unit in Thalassery on Saturday afternoon, quickly spreading through a warehouse near Kandikkal Estate and leaving residents panicked. No casualties have been reported.

Preliminary assessments indicate the fire originated within the recycling unit's storage facility. Units from Thalassery, Mahe, and Panoor rushed to the scene and worked to bring the fire under control.

The situation worsened due to the presence of cooking gas cylinders and other potential hazards within the warehouse, raising fears of an explosion. Fire and rescue personnel made urgent efforts to move the cylinders to safer locations to prevent further escalation.

Officials said strong precautionary measures were being taken to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby houses and commercial establishments.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and investigations are ongoing, officials said
