Ernakulam: The Fire and Rescue personnel had assisted a Piravom native whose hand had been pierced by a fishing hook. Rijo Mathew, a resident of Maneed, was using a Thettali (spear-rod) when the 10-centimetre barb became lodged deep within his palm.

While taking aim, the spear slipped, causing the 10-cm metal barb to pierce his palm.

Rijo initially sought treatment at several hospitals, but doctors advised that surgical intervention would be required to remove the lodged hook.

Seeking immediate relief, Rijo approached the Piravom Fire Station. Using specialised cutters, the fire rescue personnel successfully managed to cut and remove the metal portion. Following this, Rijo sought medical treatment at a hospital for his wound.
