Kochi: Following the recent fire at the Broadway market, Kochi Corporation Mayor V K Minimol said that special drives would be organised to ensure the proper disposal of waste, including plastic and paper, in areas with heavy public movement within the corporation limits. Describing the incident, which happened early on Tuesday and caused extensive damage, as unfortunate, she said steps were being taken to prevent similar incidents.
The Mayor added that safety audits would be conducted in Kochi's crowded commercial centres, such as Broadway, to strengthen safety measures. Mechanisms would also be put in place to involve the public in alerting authorities about waste accumulation in public spaces. In addition, traders and the general public would be sensitised about the dangers posed by the indiscriminate dumping of waste.
She added that a detailed investigation into the fire would be carried out and corrective measures implemented to avoid a recurrence. The Mayor was speaking after visiting the affected area along with MP Hibi Eden, MLA T J Vinod and Deputy Mayor Deepak Joy.
