Keezhariyur:After years of decline, the Nayadan river,a crucial source of drinking water for Keezhariyur panchayat,is being brought back to life. A vital source of drinking water for Keezhariyur panchayat, the river flows along the boundary shared by Keezhariyur panchayat and Koyilandy municipality. Bank protection and restoration works are currently underway as part of the rejuvenation effort.

The restoration works are being initiated as part of the ₹20.07-crore Veliyannur Challi paddy field development scheme, with ₹4.87 crore earmarked specifically for the Nayadan River. The work includes reinforcing the riverbanks with granite stone pitching topped with concrete to ensure long-term stability. The project is being executed by the Minor Irrigation Department.

The connecting canal, which carries water from the river to the Veliyannur Challi paddy fields, is also being reconstructed. The  natural flow of the river was disrupted primarily due to the construction of a canal for the Kuttiady irrigation project, after which the water body began to deteriorate. Once adorned with lush lotus plants, the river is now choked with giant salvinia and water hyacinth. The filling of sections of the river to accommodate wells and pump houses for drinking water schemes too has contributed to the stagnation.
