Driver killed as lorry carrying beer bottles rams into car in Kozhikode

Kozhikode: A man from Wayanad was killed after the lorry he was driving overturned following a collision with a car here in the early hours of Monday. The vehicle was transporting beer bottles from Karnataka to a Bevco outlet in Ernakulam. The impact shattered hundreds of bottles, spilling beer across the road.
The deceased is Akhil Krishnan (30) of Valiamram, Pulpally, in Wayanad district.
According to the FIR registered by Chevayoor police, the lorry, which was heading to Ernakulam, collided around 4 am with a Telangana-registered car that was allegedly being driven negligently near the Iringadanpalli junction.
Police said the impact caused the lorry to overturn, resulting in more than 700 boxes of beer bottles spilling onto the road. Fire and Rescue personnel rushed to the spot and pulled Akhil out of the vehicle after an hour-long rescue operation. Though he was taken to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, he was declared dead on arrival.
More than 20 police personnel have been deployed at the site to prevent people from taking away the bottles. The spilled stock will be cleared after the Excise Department completes the necessary documentation, police said.
A case has been registered against the car driver, and an investigation is underway.
