The Haripad police have registered cases against the Superintendent and staff members of the dialysis unit of the Haripad Taluk Hospital in Alappuzha, after two patients who were undergoing dialysis there died.

According to the FIR, the accused were aware that the Dialysis Unit of the Haripad Taluk Hospital was unhygienic and carelessly maintained, posing a serious risk to human life and cases have been registered under Section 125 (Act endangering life or personal safety of others), Section 106(1) (Causing death by negligence), and Section 3(5) (Common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Testing revealed that Ramachandran (59), one of the victims, suffered from a severe infection recorded at 98.1%, which is suspected to have originated from the unhygienically maintained dialysis unit.

According to the complaint, the victim, Ramachandran, a resident of Pallippad, was undergoing dialysis three times a week for the past year due to a kidney illness and was admitted to the Dialysis Unit of Haripad Taluk Hospital on December 29, 2025, at around 6 am.

However, after around an hour of starting dialysis, Ramachandran experienced shivering, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort due to an infection caused by the unhygienic condition of the unit.

Subsequently, since Ramachandran did not receive adequate treatment at the casualty department of Haripad Hospital, he was shifted to VSM Hospital at 12.15 am on December 30, 2025. However, he died at 7.45 am on December 31 while undergoing treatment.

In addition, Majeed (52), a native of Kayamkulam, who had undergone dialysis along with Ramachandran at Haripad Hospital on December 29, 2025, also died on December 30, 2025, at Vandanam Medical College Hospital. Ramachandran and Majeed were among the 27 patients who were subjected to dialysis on December 29 at the THH.

A district-level team conducted a preliminary inspection on December 31 and submitted an interim report. However, its contents have not been made public. A detailed report will be submitted after an expert team conducts a technical evaluation.
