Kozhikode: Amoebic meningoencephalitis has claimed yet another life in Kerala. The latest victim is Sachidanandan (72), a resident of Puthiyangadi, Kozhikode.

He had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital for a week for the infection, which is caused by an amoeba that attacks brain cells. According to relatives, he was hospitalised after severe vomiting, and subsequent tests confirmed amoebic meningoencephalitis. His condition deteriorated on Monday, and he passed away.

Health authorities have not yet traced the source of the infection. Water samples from the well at his residence have been collected for testing. He is survived by his wife, Geetha, and children Nirmal Raj, Remya and Vinaya.

The health department figures showed that the number of cases leapfrogged in 2025; from 39 cases in 2024 to 200; a rise of over 400 per cent. Correspondingly, the deaths due to brain-eating amoeba have gone up from 9 to 47 between 2024 and 2025.
