Alappuzha: A man who took alms for a living was found dead outside a shop in Charummood, Alappuzha, on Tuesday. He was found next to his possessions, which were bundled up into sacks. In it, the police found a whopping sum of ₹4.5 lakhs.

The man met with an accident on Monday, following which he was taken to a hospital. But he refused treatment and walked out in a hurry. His body was discovered the following day, lying next to a few sacks which contained his belongings, and he is suspected to have died from his injuries.

When the Nooranad police inspected the sacks, they found approximately ₹4.5 lakh in Rolled-up Notes, packed into several plastic tins that were taped shut to secure them in the roadside life the man had lived.

From his brief interaction with the hospital authorities the day before, he claimed to be a native of Kayamkulam, but the police could not identify him.

The money he gathered was mainly in smaller denominations, but it included a few 2000-rupee notes. Additionally, the police also found Saudi Riyal among his possessions. There were no other surprises in the sacks, though; the only other things in them were shabby clothes.

The police suspect that the man had gathered and saved the money from begging, based on the predominance of smaller denominations in his savings. "It's likely that he obtained the bigger denominations by exchanging smaller notes with shopkeepers," the Noorad police told Onmanorama.

The police also said that this possession explains his refusal to be treated at the hospital. They said that he probably rushed back to ensure his money was safe. They added that the money would be produced before the court, as they could not trace his kin.
