Idukki: A plus two student drowned in the Periyar river while bathing with his parents and relatives in Adimali here on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Edwin, a native of Thekkumala in Kambilikandam.

The incident occurred at Panamkutty, near Kallarkutty, when Edwin entered the river with his family. He is suspected of having drowned while swimming.

Fire and rescue services personnel from Adimali, along with the Vellathooval Police, rushed to the spot and launched a search operation soon after the incident. His body was later recovered and shifted to a hospital mortuary for further procedures.

It is learnt that Edwin had arrived at a relative's house along with his parents the previous day.

The search operation was led by Station Officer-in-Charge Aneesh P Joy of the Adimali Fire Force unit, along with Senior Fire and Rescue Officer Abhijith T A and officers Saneesh V T, Jijo John, Saneesh, Kishore, Jino Raju, and George Joseph.

Edwin was a student of the Government Higher Secondary School, Panickankudy.
