Communities worldwide welcomed 2025 with stunning fireworks, lively light displays, and cultural performances, although some areas commemorated the event amidst conflict and sorrow.
The South Pacific nations were the first to greet the New Year. Auckland, New Zealand, captivated spectators with magnificent fireworks and light displays celebrating the country’s indigenous culture, reported PTI. Thousands gathered in the city centre and atop volcanic peaks to enjoy the celebrations. Sydney, Australia, followed with a spectacular fireworks show over the iconic Sydney Harbor Bridge and bay. More than a million people gathered at the harbour, enjoying a musical performance by British pop star Robbie Williams and traditional Indigenous ceremonies.
In South Korea, celebrations were subdued as the nation mourned the tragic Jeju Air crash that claimed 179 lives. Public events were scaled back or cancelled during this period of national grief. Meanwhile, Bangkok, Thailand, hosted live music and fireworks displays featuring a much-anticipated performance by Lisa, the Thai member of the global K-pop sensation Blackpink. In Jakarta, Indonesia, an innovative fireworks display incorporated 800 drones, captivating spectators.
China’s state media highlighted a New Year exchange between President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasising their countries' growing ties. Xi called for unity with Taiwan, referring to the island as part of a shared family bond. Putin, in his national address, celebrated Russia’s resilience and accomplishments despite global challenges, underscoring the importance of unity.
In the Middle East, the New Year brought little celebration. Israel’s war with Hamas and the humanitarian crisis in northern Gaza cast a heavy shadow. Aid deliveries to Gaza have been largely halted since October, exacerbating the suffering of displaced populations. In Lebanon, the scars of conflict with Israel remain visible, while Syrians expressed mixed emotions of hope and uncertainty after the ousting of Bashar Assad.
Europe welcomed 2025 with both festivities and solemnity. Rome celebrated the start of Pope Francis’ Holy Year, an event expected to draw millions of pilgrims to the Vatican throughout the year. The Pope is set to preside over Mass and renew his call for global peace, with a focus on resolving conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
In Dubai, thousands gathered at the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper, for an extravagant fireworks show that lit up the city’s skyline. Across the world, the New Year arrived with both joy and reflection, underscoring the contrasts of hope and hardship that define the times.
