Washington: US President-elect Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Hamas on Tuesday, demanding the release of hostages in Gaza before his inauguration on January 20. Addressing reporters at Mar-a-Lago, Florida, Trump stated, “All hell will break out if those hostages aren’t back by the time I take office.”
Trump emphasised that he would not tolerate inheriting the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict without decisive action, referencing the October 7 attack that claimed numerous lives, reported IANS. "They should never have taken hostages or carried out that attack," he said.
Steven Charles Witkoff, Trump’s Special Envoy to the Middle East, who recently returned from negotiations in the region, expressed optimism about progress. "We are on the verge of a breakthrough," Witkoff stated, noting that efforts in Doha are yielding positive results. "The President’s clear expectations and red lines are driving this negotiation. I’m hopeful we’ll have good news by inauguration day."
Witkoff added that he would return to Doha to continue mediation efforts. "We’re working in tandem, and the progress is promising. The President’s stature and firm stance are pivotal in pushing these talks forward."
Trump reiterated his warning to Hamas, saying, “It will not end well for Hamas if hostages aren’t released. I’ve spoken to grieving parents, begging for the return of their children or even their remains. This situation cannot continue.”
Reflecting on the violence, Trump described the inhumane treatment of victims, vowing to address the crisis decisively. "If this isn’t resolved before I take office, the consequences will be severe," he said, emphasising his administration’s commitment to saving lives and restoring stability in the Middle East.
