Tailenders Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah rescued India by avoiding follow-on on the penultimate day of the third Test against Australia in Brisbane on Tuesday.
Akash (27) and Bumrah (10) held a valiant ninth-wicket partnership to steer India to 252/9 when bad light forced early stumps on day 4. India still trail by 193 runs, but have managed to avoid the risk of playing their second innings early on the final day.
Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja (77) and KL Rahul (84) led India's fightback. Skipper Pat Cummins was the most successful bowler for the hosts, taking 4/80, while Mitchell Starc claimed 3/83.
Jadeja had kept India's hopes alive by sharing a 53-run stand with Nitish Kumar Reddy (16), who was dismissed by Cummins in the post-lunch session, which was curtailed by a rain interruption lasting just over an hour.
Resuming the day at 51/4, India lost captain Rohit Sharma (10) early, before Rahul fought on to score his 17th Test fifty. The five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series is tied at 1-1.
Brief scores: Australia 445 vs India 252/9 in 74.5 overs (KL Rahul 84, Ravindra Jadeja 77, Pat Cummins 4/80)
