Five players from the Kerala team, which finished runners-up in the Ranji Trophy, have been included in the South Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy.

Opener Mohammed Azharuddeen has been named vice captain of the 15-member squad to be led by Tilak Varma. Middle order batter Salman Nizar and pacers M D Nidheesh and Basil N P are part of the squad. Young pacer Eden Apple Tom is among the six players on the standby list.

The other members of the South Zone squad are Tanmay Agarwal, Devdutt Padikkal, Mohit Kale, N Jagadeesan (wk), T Vijay, R Sai Kishore, Tanay Thyagarajan, Vyshak Vijaykumar, Ricky Bhui, Gurjapneet Singh and Snehal Kauthankar.

Kerala, led by Sachin Baby, created history earlier this year by playing their maiden Ranji Trophy final. Kerala finished as runners-up to Vidarbha in Nagpur.

Azharudeen was the leading run-getter for Kerala in the recent campaign, scoring 635 runs from 10 innings, while Salman made 628 runs from nine innings. Nidheesh bagged 12 wickets from 8 matches.

The Duleep Trophy will begin on August 28, with the South Zone scheduled to play their first match on September 4.
