Former star all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin was thrilled to see Sanju Samson feature in India's first 11 in the Asia Cup and is hoping the team management retains him going forward in the tournament.

In an Asia Cup review show on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said he was happy to find that 'Project Sanju Samson' was on. But "it would be interesting to see how long they (management) will keep him in the No. 5 role", Ashwin said.

Having played with Sanju at Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, Ashwin is aware of the Kerala star's abilities, especially when it comes to handling spin, a key factor on pitches in the UAE. "All his runs and performances have come in the top 3," Ashwin said.

"Sanju is a high-quality spin hitter, one of the best in the country. Alongside Shivam Dube, but Sanju has a better range. He can play spin in the front foot, back foot," Ashwin added.

Sanju had a productive spell as India's opener last year, hitting three T20I centuries, but has lost his spot to Shubman Gill. Ashwin believes Sanju's all-round game makes him a fit for the No 3 spot, which was occupied by captain Suryakumar Yadav against the UAE. "Sanju can be used at No 3, but Gill hasn't played there," Ashwin said.

India next play arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14 and fans of Sanju will be eager to know if he will be retained, and where he bats.
