BCCI to lodge protest with ICC on Asia Cup trophy row

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will lodge a “very strong protest” at the next ICC meeting in Dubai in November after Pakistan minister and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi walked away with the Asia Cup trophy, which the Indian team declined to receive from him.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the team’s decision was guided by national sentiment. “India cannot accept the trophy from a person who is waging a war against our country,” he stated. “Not accepting is our decision, but that does not mean the gentleman can take the trophy and medals to his hotel. This behaviour is unexpected, very childish, and we will raise the matter strongly with ICC.”
India clinched the title on Sunday with a five-wicket win over Pakistan in Dubai, powered by Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 69, which also earned him the Player of the Match award. Saikia lauded the team’s flawless campaign, highlighting India’s clean sweep over Pakistan across three encounters.
“India remained unbeaten in the tournament, winning all group and Super Four matches. Beating Pakistan 3-0 is a major achievement and a proud moment for the country,” he said.
On India’s participation in the Asia Cup despite criticism in the backdrop of the Pahalgam terror attack, Saikia clarified that the BCCI was following the government’s stance.
“For over a decade, India has not played bilateral series against Pakistan or other hostile nations. However, in multinational tournaments like the Asia Cup, participation is mandatory; otherwise, federations risk sanctions. We abided by this policy despite protests,” he explained.
Saikia concluded that the team’s emphatic win over Pakistan will bring joy across the nation.
“With this thumping 3-0 victory, our players have made the country proud and brought immense happiness to the people,” he said.
