Debutant Harnoor Singh scored an unbeaten century as hosts Punjab made 240/6 on day one of their Ranji Trophy match against Kerala in Chandigarh on Saturday.

The 22-year-old left-hander was unbeaten on 126 off 259 deliveries at stumps. For Kerala, Baba Aparajith, Ankit Sharma and N P Basil bagged two wickets each on the opening day.

Kerala are without star batter Sanju Samson, who has to join Team India in Australia for the T20I series starting October 29 in Canberra. Vathsal Govind and Ahammed Imran have been included in the Kerala side, replacing Sanju and pacer Eden Apple Tom.

Kerala played out a draw against Maharashtra in the season opener in Thiruvananthapuram, earning just a point after conceding the lead.

Basil removed Punjab skipper Naman Dhir and Anmolpreet Singh for a run each, while Aparajith clean-bowled Prabhsimran Singh (23) and trapped Salil Arora (36) leg before, shortly before the close of play.

Punjab will depend on Harnoor to carry their innings forward and post a fighting total, while Mohammaed Azharuddeen-led Kerala would want to shore up their middle-order, which failed earlier this month.
