The hosts were bundled out for 238 in response to Karnataka's massive first innings score of 586/5 declared. Kerala ended the penultimate day at 10/0, trailing by 338 runs.

Vice-captain Baba Aparajith top-scored with 88 runs, while Ahammed Imran and Sachin Baby made 31 each. Pacers Vidwath Kaverappa (4/42) and Vijakumar Vyshak (3/62) inflicted the most damage on the home side.

Kerala were five down by lunch, which arrived early after former skipper Sachin's dismissal, ending an 86-run partnership with Aparajith, who was batting on 51.

Without Sanju Samson, who is part of India's T20I series in Australia, Kerala's batting has lacked depth.

Kerala will have to survive the whole of Day 4 to avoid their first defeat. Under the leadership of Mohammed Azharuddeen, Kerala had an underwhelming start to the season, conceding four points from two matches after failing to take the first-inning lead.
