Ravichandran Ashwin was left in awe of Harmanpreet Kaur's leadership after guiding India to victory in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup with a thrilling 52-run win over South Africa in the final.
What impressed Ashwin the most was the team bringing in former captains Mithali Raj, Anjum Chopra and Jhulan Goswami to celebrate with the World Cup they could not lift.
"The Indian team handed over the trophy to Mithali Raj. I'm taking my hat off to the Indian women's team. The Indian men's team has never done something like that," Ashwin said in his Hindi YouTube show 'Ash ki Baat'.
"We (Indian men's team) talk about former stars, because we are media trained, but I haven't seen anything like this... But this women's team, by handing over the trophy to Anjum Chopra and Jhulan Goswami, they were able to see them in delight.
"The seeds that you sowed and watered, are standing as winners today, and I found that fascinating. I found that unbelievably good because the win they achieved today was made possible by the work over 25 years, probably three decades," said the former Test player.
India lost two Women's World Cup finals, in 2005 and 2017. On both occasions, Mithali Raj was the captain. In 2005, India lost by 98 runs to Australia, while in 2017 the margin of defeat was just nine runs. Harmanpreet Kaur scored 51 in that final against England.
