India were bundled out for 201 in the third session on Day 3 in response to South Africa's total of 489. The visitors chose not to enforce follow-on and made 26/0 at close of play, stretching their lead to 314 runs.
A 72-run partnership for the eighth wicket between Washington Sundar (48) and Kuldeep Yadav rescued the hosts from 122/7. Yadav faced 133 deliveries for 19 runs before Marco Jansen removed him with the new ball.
The lanky figure of Jansen literally towered over the hosts with 6/48, while Simon Harmer claimed three wickets. Yashasvi Jaiswal made 58, adding 65 for the opening wicket with K L Rahul, before India lost four wickets in the opening session.
After a humiliating defeat at the Eden Gardens, India are in danger of losing the series 2-0. India had lost a home series to New Zealand, 3-0, toward the end of last year.
